Today is a furlough day from work;
giving Danny and me the long weekend to dig up a cemetery down in Upton Co., Georgia. I'm trying to find my Revolutionary War Great Grandfather - Jones Persons(1760-1849), so we can mark his grave and put up a DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) marker.

The cemetery sits back off of a country 2-lane road. It's about 20' x 20', the size of a double car garage. We found Jones sons' grave- Lovett (1814-1862) the first visit.

Last spring, we went back to clean out the small trees and vines. But even in the spring, the yellow jackets and snakes were coming out
of "every nook & cranny"
and we came home with a
terrible case of poison ivy.
Now that it's winter; we plan to rake and scrape off the top layer of dirt in hopes of finding flat stones with names and dates.
The only unbroken head stone is Lovett's wife, Malinda Lyon Persons (1825-1908).
It's been awhile since we have gotten away for the weekend - so we're looking forward to some adventure and hopefully finding Granddad Jones!

Wish I could travel back into time and
sit for an evening with Jones Persons.
So many questions I have. . . .

That's very admirable of you to be attempting to clean up the cemetery...even if it is in hopes of finding your great-grandfather. Snakes! Poison ivy! My, but you are brave!
Oh, I hope you find him. How exciting! Enjoy your long weekend.
Good luck! What a wonderful thing to do! You are adventurous! I would love to join you. How interesting!

Where are you looking?
I think old cemeteries are fascinating. Hubby and I visited one in Massachusetts a few years ago to locate the graves of some of his relatives. It was quite an adventure.
Thanks for linking to Time Travel Thursday. Hope to see you again.
